I'm from America and I'm going to be living there for at least a year to go to a university. I have been there before to visit but I was with other people, so now that I'll be coming here alone I'm very nervous. I wanted to know things like:
1) Best phone company to switch to when in Japan?
2) Guide to transportation? I'm scared of the subways because they are so confusing to me!
3) Is it dangerous for a girl to go out clubbing and to bars alone in Tokyo, specifically Roppongi? I want to meet people but I'm very paranoid to go alone at night.

So is there any advice someone who lives here can give me? Also if anyone is currently living there or is moving there as well I would love to meet up and make friends! I've been into gyaru style since I was 14. I'm 23 now. I followed the logical progression. I was into kogyaru style throughout 8th, 9th, 10th grade and then graduated into gyaru style through age 19,20. Since starting college I've been doing oneegyaru style.

Back in my kogal days the Livejournal Ganguro comm was bursting at the seams with actually GOOD posts. Now when I visit there, all I see are sales posts from NON-gyaru members etc. It has been that way for a long time. I remember vividly that I enjoyed the Ganguro comm so much that on weekend early morning and mid-afternoons it was like an ACTUAL hangout rather than just a place online. Joelle (AlbaPeach), Frankenstain, and Ami (Burtiteri on LJ) as well as Mii (Alba Rosa Hula) and a few others were always posting something fabulous. This was back when Alba Rosa, Egoist, and Roco Nails were THE brands. Cocolulu looked much less Amekaji and more Gyaru-kei and Kapalua was a brand...not just a place in Hawaii. MA*RS, Jesus Diamante, and Himegyaru in general were NON-EXISTENT. Kinpatsu was the only way to go, NO ONE had brown hair...it was blonde or milk tea. Everyone had a tan, and light panda eyes were the norm. It was 2003 and all of us gals were in LOVE with platform boots, legwarmers, and miniskirts.

I MISS IT SO MUCH....Now when I look around I see everyone flipping between Lolita and Himegyaru as it suits them. I see weekend only gyaru, hobbyist gyaru, and absolute posers. We all ate and breathed gyaru, many of us still do. We just hide in the recesses because we don't want to take part in what is happening. The western gyaru scene may be "huge" now, but its SO embarrassing. Just because you are head to toe in MA*RS, that doesn't mean you are gyaru. You have no roots, and next year....you'll move on to some other style. You people always do. I couldn't count on all of our fingers the amount of people I've seen/heard/witnessed who were visual-kei, then lolita, then they became gyaru, and now their mori-girl or fairy-kei. If you love EVERYTHING from Japan, your becoming gyaru was just ANOTHER attempt to do something, anything Japanese. That is what most people's problem is. Plain and simple.

Where have all the gals gone? I only see a glimmer today of what I saw/felt/took part in in 2003-2005. The nostalgia is unbearable. I've been living in Shinjuku prefecture for a few months now, which means all my important documents have to be delt with at the Shinjuku city office.
Unfortunately though, this office is situated in Kabuki-cho. From what I hear it can be a dangerous area, known for its red district night life. Not a good place for a girl to go on her own, especially of she doesn't know Tokyo that well.
My boyfriend doesn't let me go there, even if it's important.
It was really hard to get him to come to the office with me since he works all the time. Not only this but the job centre for foreigners, as well as free japanese lessons are also located in Kabuki-cho! (>_<)
This is getting a bit frustrating and I'm considering going there only during the mornings or something.

My question is, just how dangerous is Kabuki-cho?

Is it really full of guys who want to drag you into a strip club, or is it fine in some circumstances to go?

I host a girl's fashion blog dedicated to Japanese fashion and culture, and as a result I have many female readers and friends interested in dating Japanese men. I'm currently with a long-time boyfriend who is Japanese, but we tend to "meet in the middle" in our relationship. He's been living in America for quite a long time, and I've been avidly studying the Japanese language and culture for almost the same amount of time he has been living here in the States, and have made a few trips to Japan myself. As a result, our relationship isn't typical of what many Japanese-male-with-foreign-female couples experience because we've both been exposed to the others' culture for an extended period of time.

All the same, I'm planning out a series all about realities of foreign women dating Japanese men. It's a concept that's been gaining a lot of popularity lately, but it seems many are dating solely for ethnicity or "status" on both sides (though not everyone, of course). For this series, I want to focus on the realities of such interracial dating--it's not meant to slander either party or to exalt either party; the goal is simply to provide an accurate understanding of issues these couples will face.

The series will be broken up into a few different posts, starting with certain stereotypes of dating Japanese men (i.e. "The Mamma's Boy," "The Shogun Traditionalist," "The Jealous Lover," etc.). Following articles will include topics such as common cultural barriers, expectancies in relationships, and "how to make it work"-style articles.


If you have any information you'd like to share (insights, opinions, personal experience), I'd love to hear from you, either on this forum or via my website! I'm afraid that my post will be too one-sided without extra input, so any external observation helps!
