I can tell the difference...I think.

Korean girls don't pluck their eye brows, they mostly have their hair black, and they have a different fashion style, but there are a few who likes Japanese fashion.
Taiwan/HK follows Japanese styles.
Hk girls have bigger and flatter noses and more Tom Boys from HK.
Chinese don't have any fashion style, at least the ones I've seen.
Lastly...I take my guess and then listen carefully to which language they speak.

Its hard to tell them apart if they have no fashion style.

i can recognize korean and japanese mostly~ chinese too, but kinda hard with taiwanese, unless i have to hear their accents

i can usually tell by the eyes and other facial structures but i'm not gonna list them because its too hard to generalize for an entire ethnicity

usually epscially between japanese,korean,thai,tawainese,phillipino etc..... only hard thing for me is when chinese girls get plastic surgery then i sometimes think they are japanese. Also japanese tend to have higher nose bridges than the others at least from waht ive seen.

I live in New York City, and it's basically a Melting Pot. There's every type of asian living here and I love that! I also believe Asians do not look all the same. I'm chinese but I could usually tell if a person is Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or Filipinos. I can't come up with an explanation on how I could tell, it's like an instinct, of course I don't always get it right. Here's why: With makeup, hairstyling(different haircuts/haircoloring) and clothing, an asian can look like another type of asian and people can mistaken pretty easily. I'm chinese and usually when I'm greeted outside or by people online, I'm usually mistaken as japanese. I know a lot of chinese guys and girls who look japanese or korean, and vice versa because of their sense of style. I don't think it's true that chinese people are the least fashionable and have no fashion style. You can't judge a big population with only seeing only less then 1% of it in the world. How one dress in one part of the world does not reflect how others may dress in other parts of the world.
I also don't think each type of asian have definite face features, people get their face features through their parents but sometimes there are people who have face features that their parents don't have at all(I'll save the gene talk for scientists). Another reason it's getting difficult to tell everyone apart is not all asians have asian names, most of my asian friends are not given asian names. My name is not an asian name either. I think this is why because here in america, some asian parents fear their child's name will be difficult for the teachers in school to pronounce and remember. So I believe instead of telling them apart at first, even though you might have an idea, we should get to know a person by who they are and not by what they are. I mean, it doesn't really matter right?

I find it really hard to tell them apart but I think I can guess an asian persons nationality about 60% of the time.

In my country, when I see an Asian wearing a hat, she/he is most probably Japanese.

Heheh. But that's not always the case though, but 90% of the time they are.

I'm chinese and I can recognize who's Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean etc simply by the looks.

I live really close to a korean business district (SMALL! lol) and people automatically think my bf is korean when we are there, but if we go different parts of seattle, He is either chinese or japanese, depending on which store he is in, and on 38th st in Tacoma he is vietnamese. So really I learned it's hard to guess what ethnicity a person is, becuase although my bf looks japanese to me (plus I know him so it's an advantage for me) he looks like everything elese to everyone else, We were even in another part of Tacoma and some one thought he was mexican. :/ whodathunkit?

i'm chinese and i can usually tell what ethnicities asian people are
unless they are mixed ethnicities LOL, then it's harder
usually we can recognize our own race, if that makes any sense.

as for styles/looks:
here are some extreme generalizations, I don’t mean to offend anyone

koreans dress more conservatively.
lots of girls get surgery for double eyelids, it’s extremely common.

TW girls love their hair extensions. TW boys love to style their hair. TW follows some japanese styles, so they may be quite stylish. Circle/Colour contact lenses are popular. The bigger and more doll-like your eyes look, the better.

In HK, skinny = good. Curves aren’t important, your weight is. [I’m HK, btw.]

Japanese, many are quite stylish. Orange/brown/blonde hair colours are very common.

Chinese, some may not have the best style. However there are many different Chinese peoples.

Of course, there are many, many exceptions out there.

Yes, I am aware there are a ton of other asian ethnicities out there, but I’ll stop here for now.

I live in a city where the amount of Asians nearly match the amount of non-asian peoples, so I’d say I’ve seen a great variety of Asians.

I can tell if someone is Japanese or not, usually. But I can't tell the difference between Vietnamese/Chinese/etc. So I can only differentiate "Japanese" and "not-Japanese".

I couldn't tell you how, though.
